Kansas State Wildcats Hire Collin Klein as Head Coach

Kansas State Wildcats have hired Collin Klein, a former player and assistant coach, as their new head coach.

What's the background on Collin Klein?

Collin Klein committed to Kansas State in 2007 and now returns as head coach, aiming to improve the team's performance.

He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2012 and spent nine years on the K-State staff, including two as offensive coordinator.

What's the current state of the team?

The Wildcats declined to participate in a bowl game last year but have been bowl eligible in 14 of the past 16 seasons.

They have three 10-win seasons in that time, including an 11-2 record in Klein's senior year.

What's the plan for the upcoming season?

Klein will lean on senior quarterback Avery Johnson, a dual threat who accounted for 2,862 yards and 26 touchdowns last year.

The team returns top rusher Joe Jackson, receiver Jaron Tibbs, and tight end Garrett Oakley.

Their next game is against Nicholls Colonels on September 5, 2026.

The Wildcats will host Colorado on October 31 at Folsom Field.

Collin Klein said the team will be a "very blue-collar outfit" with a high level of preparation and discipline.

Avery Johnson is an elite competitor with a high football IQ, according to Klein.

The team's ability to package plays for Johnson will be key to their success.

Erie High School graduate John Pastore is the lone returning starter on the offensive line.

Tanner Morley, a Valor Christian graduate, is projected to start at left guard.

Several other transfers will compete for starting spots up front.

The Wildcats are looking to improve upon last season's record with Klein at the helm.
